Virtual Puppeteers is freely available downloadable software that enables you to create your own virtual 3D puppets and stages from scratch. But that is not all. You can also meet other puppets over the internet, and act out stories in a shared stage. You can record those stories, and then share them with the rest of the world by uploading them to the Virtual Puppeteers website.
You need to download the software HERE. It is currently Windows XP/PC only, and needs a reasonable processor to run. If the home page animation runs smoothly, your computer will be fine. To share your stage with someone else, you will need a broadband internet connection.
You will also need a microphone and headphones/speakers if you wish to join the lobby and make collaborative plays, as they use voice as well as puppet movement over the internet.
Please note that the lobby and stage areas are currently UNMODERATED - you enter at your own risk!
The main components of the Virtual Puppeteers software package are:
- Puppet workshop. Used to create your own virtual puppets in 3D. This is done by moulding and painting the virtual plasticine blobs. You only need your mouse, the Virtual Puppeteers software, and your creativity!
- Stage workshop. The stages used in which your plays are designed and built here.
- The Lobby and Live Stage - meet other puppeteers and act out stories in your shared stage. Once you have rehearsed your stories, you can record them in realtime, and then upload them to the Virtual Puppeteers website for the world to see. You act out the story and communicate with the other puppet using the movement of your puppet, and using your voice.
